Root Canal
A root canal is a procedure that a patient undertakes that helps preserve the natural tooth when it becomes badly infected and decayed. When a tooth becomes decayed or infected, due to the breakdown of the nerve or pulp of the tooth an abscess may occur that can cause severe health issues which can be even more costly if a root canal is not performed. When a root canal is undertaken the inside of the tooth is cleaned of infection as the nerve and pulp are removed as well.
The overall procedure can usually require multiple visits, depending on the severity of the tooth in question and on whether or not it is performed by a dentist or endodontist. Dr. Langer has many years of experience resulting in numerous successful treatments of patients pertaining to root canals. The first part of the process entails the consultation, assessment and X-rays of the tooth in question. Dr. Langer must determine the shape and locate the signs of infection within the tooth. The next step is to keep the tooth dry by applying a rubber dam followed by the drilling of a hole in the patients tooth in order to get access to the pulp. Dr. Langer will then proceed with cleaning the infected area, removing the pulp and nerve utilizing special tools called root canal files. A water and special solution called hypochlorite will be used to flush the infected area so that it is free of any debris. Depending on the severity of the infection, Dr. Langer will either wait for the next appointment to seal the tooth in which case a temporary filling with medication may be applied. In either case the tooth will eventually be sealed with a special compound inside the canal and finally a filling placed on the exterior of the tooth.
Many people are fear that a root canal is very painful when in reality it is not, as proper anesthesia, along with slow and careful instrumentation, can lead to pain-free root canal. After getting a root canal the patient will feel mild discomfort and sensitivity due to the procedure where in certain cases Mr. Langer may prescribe certain over the counter medications. It is recommended to avoid chewing on the side where the treated tooth is located until it has proper time to heal.
The cost of a root canal procedure will vary depending on the severity of the tooth, and the health provider in question and the type of tooth that needs treatment.
