Periodontal Care

Unhealthy gums are a major warning to problems ahead and the possibility of future tooth loss. This can also lead to an increased risk for stroke and heart disease. A complete dental exam should include a periodontal evaluation.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. When detected early, it can be treated comfortably, economically and successfully. Most important, early detection and treatment can help you keep your teeth a lifetime.

Detection of gum disease is done by taking x-rays, visual examination of the teeth and gums for swelling, bleeding, or other abnormalities, and periodontal probing, which is a small measurement taken around the gum line of each tooth. Large measurements indicate bone loss and potential loosening of the affected teeth.

Gum disease is caused by the buildup of bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. Daily brushing to remove the plaque is essential to a healthy mouth. If plaque is not removed, it hardens to form a rough, porous deposit called calculus or tartar which produce toxins. These toxins destroy supporting tissue around the teeth causing bone loss and eventual tooth loss without treatment.

Prevention and treatment will keep your teeth for a lifetime.

Categories of Gum Disease

Type I - Gingivitis

In early gum disease there is bleeding and soreness around the gums that support the teeth. This is due to build-up of plaque and tartar above the gum line. Gingivitis is completely reversible following a scaling and polishing of the teeth to remove the plaque and tartar. Keep in mind that proper brushing and flossing can avoid gingivitis.

Type II - Periodontitis (Early)

As gum disease progresses and not treated in its early stages (gingivitis), further destruction of the supporting tissue and bone around the teeth are damaged. Here the bone that supports the teeth is destroyed due to the toxins be produced by the bacteria entrapped under the gum line. This causes the formation of “pockets” around the teeth, which if not treated, will progress to the loosening and early loss of your teeth. Again, treatment can prevent further destruction. This requires the removal of calculus and plaque above and below the gum line with a small amount of anesthesia (novocaine). It is a painless procedure which induces healing around the teeth and will avoid the future need for surgery in most instances.

Type III and IV - Advanced Periodontitis

Unfortunately the progression of this disease can lead to tooth loss. However, in many instances surgical intervention can prevent the loss of your teeth and prevent further bone destruction. Remember, be true to your teeth, or they will be false to you.
